Possibilities

AIP - Autoimmune Protocol

Largely paleo-based style of eating, with considerations to lifestyle as well. Works by eliminating known enemies of autoimmune conditions and re-introducing slowly while investigating any reactions.

Primal Exercise

From the Primal Blueprint, practicing the minimal effective dose of exercise including a lot of movement, less frequent weight-training, and primal essential movements.

Primal Blueprint

Yoga

A more gentle approach to exercise, with the combined benefit of breathwork and meditation built in.

My favourite place to practice

Chiropractic

The manipulation of the muscular-skeletal system to relieve subluxations caused by everyday life, allowing for optimal nerve-flow.

My personal place of practice

Meditation

The practice of reminding your own mind to slow down, focus on breathing, and pause an otherwise overactive component of your body.

My favourite meditation app

Cryotherapy

Short doses of extreme cold to reduce systemic inflammation as well as training heart rate variability. I’ve tried it a few times, but it’s pricey and tricky to find. IMO, more research is needed about safety and benefits.

Cold Therapy

Cryotherapy is pricey, difficult to find, and more research is needed about it’s safety for me. But cold showers, bodies of water, and ice is readily available! There are some great tips in this blog post, including benefits and best timing. Very beneficial for the immune system and inflammation!

Sauna

Many science-backed benefits from allowing your body to reach higher temperatures, from toxin release to gains from allowing small doses of physical stress.

Forest Bathing

A fancy term for getting out into nature. Connection to the sounds, smells, atmosphere out in the forest can yield significant gains mentally. But there is definitely biology at work here, and Dr. Qing Li articulates it here and in the book ‘Forest Bathing‘.

Therapy

Psychotherapy is a great tool to manage stress, and get assistance working through personal blocks. Recognizing my autoimmune triggers included emotional stress and past traumas was a huge step in my personal recovery.

Sunshine Exposure

The physical health benefits gained from obtaining vitamin D through sunshine are indisputable. Mentally, there’s much to be gained as well. It’s part of why we feel so good on vacation! Check out our blog post about Vitamin D.

Sleep

In Matthew Walker Ph.D.’s seminal work “Why We Sleep”, the importance of recovery via sleep is laid out remarkably. Decades of studies are proving the importance of all facets of optimal health. Dr. Walker’s Ted Talk led me down the path of exploration as to why we actually sleep (spoiler alert, it’s not just to cure sleepiness).

Walking

As mentioned under primal exercising, the benefits of a lot of movement are well documented. Simply walking is a great way to get out and enjoy nature while improving health. Here’s a walking blog

Gut Health

Medical science is finally learning what Hippocrates said 400 years ago BC: “All diseases originate in the gut”. That’s an all-encompassing claim, but it speaks to the importance of a balanced microbiome, and it’s worth exploring improving your own.

Healthy microbiome for healing autoimmune disease!

Gratitude

Being grateful for what we have, has profound effects on our overall outlook, and in turn, our mental health. There are practices you can put in place, to ensure gratitude exists in your own life.

Fast daily journal I love

Journaling

Get it out of your brain, and down on the page. It’s well accepted that journaling is a great tool for helping you to focus and process thoughts.

10 Benefits!

Support

Very important to have the people in your life supportive of your health journey. Consider sharing what you’re going through, what your goals are, and what you need from them.

Reiki

The art of reiki is the belief that every cell in your body has its own life force. Reiki masters place their hands over your body, and work to improve its energy flow.

Supplements

Definitely something to be worked out with your own medical practitioner, naturopath, nutritionist. Supplementing your diet with essential nutrients / vitamins / minerals can be very beneficial.

Trial and Error

Less of a tactic, and more an understanding that as you journey toward improving your body and mind, there are many lessons to be learned from figuring out what works for you and your individuality.

Stress balance

Such a major factor in controlling autoimmune flares, or any disease. When our body is constantly in fight or flight mode, it can’t properly function. Short-term stress responses are an evolutionary necessity for threats, but not how we should operate long-term day to day.

Breath work

Controlling breath through practice has amazing benefits for balancing stress and putting your body into a preferred state. I have recently begun exploring the Wim Hof Method, and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve also taken breathwork classes, and of course, there are plenty of breathwork books including Breath by James Nestor

Float therapy

Sensory deprivation tanks can be described as a closeable pod with very shallow water and thousands of pounds of epsom salts. Once inside, you can float on your back effortlessly in total silence and darkness (which you can control with music and light if you choose). The weightlessness of your body and silence of your surroundings has profound physical and mental benefit.

My choice for floating in my own local area.

Earthing

In his book “Earthing”, Clinton Ober and his medically-trained co-authors delve into the science behind connecting your body to the Earth, and its well-documented health benefits. Short video here with a synopsis. This has become a regular part of my mindful practice.

Pets

People with the companionship of a dog or cat quite simply seem happier and more fulfilled. It’s not for everyone, but worth looking into!

Inspiration

“I have faced it, a life wasted, I ain’t ever going back again” – Eddie Vedder

I love music, lyrics. What inspires you? What quotes move you? Find them, and use them. – Coach Joel

Mentors

Incredibly important, but what if I don’t have one? The truth is, they’re everywhere. Online! I have a lot of different people in the world of wellness I truly look up to, follow, and try to emulate. Just like an in-person mentor. They don’t even know I exist. Inspiring wellness contributors here.
